Boat Handling Experience Course

Boat and people

The Boat Handling Experience Course is a one day course held at Nelson's Wharf. Courses run on any day by arrangement.

Price is £210 per person.

Maximum 3 delegates per course. 09:00 to 17:00 over one day. RYA Inland Waterways Handbook provided free of charge.

For boaters who still need top quality tuition by a professional RYA instructor but don't need the RYA certificate then we offer the one day Boat Handling Experience Course. It follows the same syllabus as the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course but doesn't require you to reach an independent level of expertise. In other words, we might still be giving you advice right up to the end of the course. It also leaves us free to alter the syllabus if you request it.

This one day course will take almost all beginners to a good standard of helmsmanship. Equally, our 20 years experience of training has shown on many occasions that even the seasoned boater can still have much to learn and we will happily push the boundaries and show you more tips when you have reached the required level.

By the end of the course you should be able to do most if not all of the following to a reasonable standard:

Engine checks and starting.
Leaving a mooring.
Collision avoidance.
Meeting and passing boats.
Arriving at a mooring.
Knots and hitches.
Safety, including man over board.

We also discuss many other boating related subjects and anything specific questions you may have.

The course is based at Nelson’s Wharf on the Grand Union Canal at Stockton.

Successful students will be issued with the WWT Boat Handling Experience Certificate.
