The RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Course is a two day course held at Nelson's Wharf. Courses run on Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the season and on other days by arrangement.

Price is £370 per person.

Maximum 3 delegates per course.

The RYA Certificate is an internationally recognised certificate and is also recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, (MCA), for commercial use in certain areas. As such, delegates must reach a specific standard by the end of the course. This used to be a one day course for experience boaters only but this is no longer offered by the RYA.

This two-day course will take beginners to a proficient standard of helmsmanship required for the RYA certificate. Equally, our 20 years experience of training has shown on many occasions that even the seasoned boater can still have much to learn and we will happily push the boundaries and show you more tips when you have reached the required level.

By the end of the course you should be able to do all of the following to a proficient standard:

Engine checks and starting.
Leaving a mooring.
Steering.
Collision avoidance.
Meeting and passing boats.
Arriving at a mooring.
Turning.
Locks.
Bridges.
Knots and hitches.
Safety, including man over board.
Reversing.

We also discuss waterway features that physically can't be included on the course. E.g. lift and swing bridges, river operation, tunnels and we answer any questions that you may have about anything related to boating.
